Who we are
The New Brunswick Islamic Center, Inc.(NBIC) is a community based, nonprofit educational and charitable services organization based in New Brunswick, New Jersey. NBIC offers a wide range of religious, educational, outreach, and charitable services to Muslims and to the community at large in the Central New Jersey region.
NBIC was established in the late 1980s by a diverse group of Muslim students from nearby Rutgers University. The founding of the institution was prompted by the need to fulfill two complimentary needs of the nascent community–the need for a suitable place to come together for the purposes of congregational prayer and other types of religious fellowship, as well as the desire to have a center located within the heart of the broader community from which its activism and outreach could function and thrive. Masjid al Huda, a small, storefront rental property located in the heart of New Brunswick, which was both close to the Rutgers campuses as well as deep in the heart of the local community, became the new home for Muslims living and working in the local area.
Over the years NBIC has striven to maintain the Islamic values and identity around which it was founded. Namely, that prayer and other acts of worship form the basis around which every Muslim community is built, and secondly, that our devotion to God is intimately tied to connection and service to all of his creation. At the same time, NBIC has also endeavored to create a welcoming space for Muslims of all ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds, genders, and age groups. Part of NBIC’s unique identity has been a devotion to both the traditional relationships with our shared Islamic heritage as spelled out in the Qur’an, sunnah, and the foundations laid by previous generations of Muslim scholars, as well as the active engagement in the fostering of and creation of a new Islamic identity rooted in our unique circumstances as American Muslims.
The community has grown enormously over time, and after many years of searching, was finally able to effect a move into a larger facility. In 2011, NBIC will be relocating its main operations into a spacious, newly renovated community center located at 1330 Livingston Avenue in North Brunswick, not too far outside of New Brunswick’s city limits. The new facility will include ample prayer space, multipurpose room, dedicated recreational space, and more to house the diverse activities of the area’s community.
