Zakat/Charitable Giving

“Those who spend (in charity) of their goods by night and by day, in secret and in public, have their reward with their Lord.  On them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve.” (30:39)

The giving of charity and the responsibility to care for the less fortunate among us is a duty that we take very seriously at NBIC.  Our center collects and distributes the obligatory religious charity to needy Muslims in the local area.  In addition, we distribute other types of charity and emergency assistance when funds are available.

You can pay your zakat al mal (annual charitable tax) to us at NBIC at any time during the year and we will distribute on your behalf.  We also collect zakat al fitr in Ramadan and distribute it in the form of gift cards redeemable at local supermarkets before the ‘Eid prayer every year.  Alhamdulillah, thousands of dollars in supermarket vouchers are distributed every year to local families in need.  To calculate your zakat al mal, click here.

If you have an inquiry regarding paying or receiving zakat or other charitable assistance, please follow the process below:

 

Zakat al Mal is available to those in the community of extreme financial assistance.
In order to assess whether one can receive zakat al mal the following procedure will be undertaken.
Process:

  1. You must come in person with proof of need and apply in person. Forms will be available in the main office of the masjid and can also be obtained via email. To Request a form please call (732) 305-2581 and leave a message.
  2. Applications will be reviewed and within 14 days of submission the applicant will be notified of a decision.
  3. Any given applicant that is asking for assistance twice in a calendar year, will be wait-listed until all new applications are received and processed, so that everyone that qualifies is helped at least once.**

*Note: Zakat al Mal is rewarded based upon needs and available funds. They are available on a first come first serve basis and when the New Brunswick Islamic Center has depleted it’s funds they will not be rewarded until the fund is replenished.
